Community Owned Vegetarian Co-op

HELP MAKE THIS DREAM COME TRUE

Thank you, for your interest in the Denver Cooperative Grocery store.

We are a group of individuals committed to making this dream a reality.

We are planning to open a retail grocery store that will offer foods and other products that are produced in a socially ethical, environmentally friendly and primarily organic manner. We also want to include a café and community event / meeting space. We are now looking for those persons who understand the value of a community owned cooperative grocery store and are willing to help bring it into existence by investing in a membership. Membership fees will finance the development of the store.

We are planning to lease a space somewhere in Denver, in a location that we will be able to afford, in a neighborhood that will support it, preferably with easy access and parking.

We will lease a space, procure equipment, and stock the goods as soon as we have enough interested members and financing.

Anyone will be able to shop at this store, although members will be granted special privileges including exclusive discounts on certain items in the store, and a vote in the elections for the board of directors. This board will uphold and direct the ethics of the store, as well as hire and oversee the General Manager. We plan to create a full service grocery store, a café, and a community meeting space. We will favor local, organic, environmentally friendly products and services.

Freedom is a cherished commodity in human life. Our freedom can be measured by the amount of control we have over our basic necessities. The more control we have, the more free we are.

Cooperative ownership provides a community with the ongoing, long term peace of mind; knowing that your grocer is more interested in your health, happiness and well-being than in profits. Community ownership can also provide more benevolent choices for supplies of goods. We can know that our goods are coming from industries where people and the environment are treated humanely. In many cases we will be able to offer these products at a lower price; as we have less overhead and a closer relationship between producer and consumer.

Please remember, all goods have an inherent minimal cost: either the consumer pays the reasonable price, or the laborers pay through substandard compensation, (ie, slavery, and who wants to support that?). Or the environment pays (and then the consumer pays in a different way, through increased medical costs caused by living in a ruined environment). Often, corporate producers have few scruples when it comes to their quest for profit. For this reason, we at the Denver co-op Grocery may not be able to sell all goods as cheaply as the corporate competitors. However, we will provide high quality, organic goods at the lowest reasonable price. And we will aid the growth and development of a more humane culture.
